Adding your voice here to the others who have reported the same should count as making at least partial amends. Yes, you did not be your very best self by not making more of an issue including getting yourself kicked out of the military.

Joining the military, few understand how big a step that is. Putting yourself in the clutches of that flawed and possibly corrupt chain of command, how could not have expected to compromise your values even if you were not in a war zone. Add to that actual war, killing as directed by your chain of command. You gave up your personal agency, maintaining your moral compass would be a challenge. Even killing people who might deserve it is a moral dilemma. Someone putting you in harms way so you have to kill to defend yourself and your friends......and they do that all the time.

I have a question for you, would you today encourage anyone to join the military?

Regarding the original question. I suspect that the depraved practice will be diminishing as the light has been shown, continue to be the light, it might just be your redemption.
