Data Scientist seems like a funny title. I could see that data visualization might be a skill you might want to claim or an area of specialization. Data generation and interpretation is key to my area of engineering.

Are you familiar with the technique "design of experiment" where instead of keeping everything constant except one variable you you vary many parameters including a wide range possible combinations of the chosen variables, run all the planned test cases and then present to data in the n dimensional space. Of course you could just present the data in flat two dimensional plot using only the test points where only one parameter was varied but if you present the data in three dimensions with color variation indicating output parameter you can put all the data together. There for example of a friction stir weld strength as a function of spindle speed, forge force and travel speed you plot these parameters in three dimensions with the color indicating the weld strength with peak strength being red and lesser strength fading to orange, yellow, green and blue. The sweet spot will be the bright red and the sensitivity of the various parameters will be displayed by the size and shape of the different colored areas. You can slice this plot like they do MRI's or CAT scans. Or you can fly thru them or section them like you see the Earth cut away to expose the atmosphere, crust, mantle outer core and inner core.

The data visualization techniques in your story are so old school. Have you seen any space shuttle 3D flow field visualizations.
