Every sane person acts in what they perceive as their own best interest. Even the charity you do is really to make yourself feel better, don't kid yourself.

It should be no surprise that "politicians on both sides of the aisle often act in their own best interests. It’s stupid."

It is not stupid it is normal. To make things better we need to make the incentives for politicians to act to more benefit their constituents stronger. Actually, provide greater disincentives for them to act to benefit their big donors and their pocketbooks.
