Everyone cares what other people think, even you. Some care more than others. I care less than my wife not more. She is a bit insecure and seeks external validation a lot.

Beside the ego boost there are other reasons to care what others think.

If you look like you have money, people will give you better service at least at nicer places or actually it may be more of the flipside, if you look poor and ugly you will get no or poor service at nice places.

Sometimes you might want to look a little rougher. To appear to be a less rich target or maybe a harder target.

Then there is all the "Dale Carnegie" reasons to make a good impression.
