F um if they got to be judgmental. I don't apologize for the state of my abode when I have company. My house will not soil your clothes or make you sick. It is pretty messy but not like there is no place to sit in the family room and the dining room table is actually set with the plates and glasses upside down on clean cloth place mats (I only use the dining room when I have dinner guests). My house has dust and cobwebs, too bad. Yeah, my sewing table is at one end of the dining room, and it is kind of a mess. It is a workspace not a display.
The only time I would need to "panic clean" is if I am get overnight guest on short notice. I have a ton of stuff stored in the spare bedrooms. I could move it to the attic, garage or work shop for short term but things are better stored in the better cliamate controls of the bedrooms.
I doubt that if some husband did a fair share of the housework, his wife would admit it.
