I disagree with:

Universities were never supposed to be vocational schools.

If that was the case then my degree would not have required, Linear Algebra, Computer Programing, Engineering Graphics, Space Mechanics, Aerodynamics, Strength of Materials, and a whole lot of other very specific education in skills.

I think you must have meant that a classical liberal arts education is not a vocational education. It is not meant to prepare you for a job but to prepare you as a citizen. A science or technology degree is clearly a vocational education. Most or at least many Universities offer both tracks one that prepares you for a job and one that prepares you as a person. They do try to throw a little of the prepares you as a person into the mix for science or technology degrees but with the already high credit requirements for those degrees there in not a lot of time to spare for arts and culture.
