I don't see how the US can use tariffs to push our "industrial food industry" on the UK. Well, I guess I can, sort of, if the UK or EU block GMO crops then the US might impose retaliatory tariffs. Similarly, if the EU or the UK impose high tariffs on US food stuffs to protect their industry from lower cost products from the US.

So you are saying if the UK does not play ball per the EU rules, the EU might retaliate and if the UK does play by the EU rules, then the US might retaliate. I don't see that is messy, I see that as quite normal.
