I don’t think you really have gained as much understanding of conservatives as you think.
It is not simply about owning a gun for self-protection. It is about doing what you can for you and your family and not being unnecessary dependent on the government or someone else.
Having a gun is only a tiny part of using a firearm for self-defense. There is training, situational awareness, an understanding of the law and communication about all of this with your family members and community.
Having a gun without proper training and proper mindset will get the wrong people killed. Having a gun only make you safer if know what you are doing. The statistics show having guns decreased the safety of people in general but that is because most of the population and many gun owners do not have proper training or mindset leading to accidents, suicides, and bystander shootings.
Clearly you should not have a gun, at least not right now. You have a lot to learn first. Think about this. If your neighbor knew that you had a gun, knew how to use it and were not afraid to use it, do you think he would come armed through your door? Stepping across that threshold with a gun invokes your right to use lethal force in self-defense if a reasonable person would feel threatened or at least in some communities.
