I have known a lot of Landlords who had real jobs. I worked with them, they were my co-workers. They worked full time as engineers and instead of putting their savings in a mutual fund or buying stocks they bought houses. Yes, some of the contracted the property management and maintenance. Often times these properties were cash flow negative or neutral, no profit except the equity from principal payments or increase in property values.

Today many of these evil landlords have retired and don't have a "real job" anymore. They are living on the passive income from the rental property they bought when they were working.

I have been a tenant, I never felt coerced when signing a lease. I had choices, I picked the property that I though was the best choice for me.

If I couldn't pay my rent, they would not have had to evict me. I would have vacated so as not to continue to go deeper into debt. People who can't pay their rent need to be in charity housing not rental property. They belong in either public housing or a charity or city/state run homeless shelter. People who don't pay their rent drive up the rents for people who can pay their rent.
