I have long contended that our leaders have been in denial in regards to climate change. Not personally in denial, I think the know and realize the truth. They deny it publicly because public acceptance would require they take actions that will cost them their positions of power. They lie to maintain the flow of money that keeps them in power and for some the lie actually get them the votes of those who are truly convinced climate change is a hokes.

Our leaders are playing games, jockeying for advantage, deflecting blame on to others, acting in the interests of their benefactors, and plotting for global advantage. No crisis should go to waste.
