I have worked in our nation's space programs for more than 4 decades and have done some STEM outreach to middle schoolers. Yes, the idea is to inspire kids to learn by using the visibly exciting space programs. In many ways space travel is a dead end. Too much effort for too little return. If it did not spin off some very useful technology, it would be a waste. Fortunately, investments in space travel spin off useful terrestrial benefits. Going to Mars is not going to happen this century, the social demands of climate change will prevent that along with the huge challenge it presents even without the social problems we face on Earth. Even a permanent presence on the Moon is probably out of reach.
