I hope but doubt I get it. Its complicated.
In one way I don't think this is about race so much as it is about empathy. When one of your coworkers or employees is facing challenges or a rough patch, you except that and adjust.
In a different way, it is about race. Black people are in a perennial rough patch. Yes, the recent news has been especially rough for Black people but when was it not rough. I cannot see clearly to a time when things will not be rough for most black people.
I am loathed to set a lower standard of performance for my black co-workers, I feel that would be demeaning but I don't feel that failure to meet that higher standard is grounds for censure. A person's ability should be assessed based on their accomplishments with consideration given to the obstacles that the person had to overcome to achieve those accomplishments.
I think some colleges use such an assessment in admissions. High achievement by the privileged pales in comparison to modest achievement against great obstacles.
Jesus, I have seen what some black single moms can accomplish in spite of all the impediments they have to deal with. I often wonder if the impediments were removed what they would accomplish. I also expect that if those impediments were removed they might just take the opportunity to catch their breath if they dared. So probably are so paranoid that they would not pause the catch their breath and just press on as hard as ever.
Maybe I see this because it is just the opposite of my personal experience. I have been so privileged that rarely has an obstacle been placed in my path. Not that I did not have to work or achieve just that the only challenges were all normal, typical except when I married a disadvantaged (white) woman. Her disabilities did present abnormal challenges.
