I kind of think that the home digital assistant thing is just a novelty. Not worth investing in. If I had a home digital assistant it could not do very much because I don't have lights that can be controlled by anything but the mechanical switch. Our home security system is not compatible with any modern computer system and our smart TV's are Ruku. My phone can do a lot of the things people ask of Alexa but I don't talk to my phone. I type in searches. Alexa is cute like a dog that does tricks but not really that interesting or useful.

How much does it cost to rewire a house so that Alexa can control all the lights, do you buy new switches or do you replace the light fixtures? Do we do this ourselves or do we hire an electrician? Is all this stuff going to be supported for 50 years or can we expect to have to replace the switch or fixtures every few years because of software obsolesce.

This software obsolesce thing really bothers me. For years I kept old computers because new computers would not run software I bought. I wonder if you will have to keep and old Alexa around to control your lights?
