I love the idea of colonizing the moon and asteroid. I want us to build huge space stations and planetary transports.
But.
It would be easier to build and support a sustainable habitat on a post disaster Earth than to build self-sufficient space colonies.
Whether it is post nuclear winter, post Climate Change, post planet killing asteroid, post giant killer volcano or post bioweapon/plague dystopia building a self-sufficient sustainable biodome would be easier than the sustainable self-sufficient space colony. One benefit of the space colony is that it would be remote and easy to defend from pirates from Earth trying to take over your home.
Being snug in your biodome on Earth while the rest of the population is dying and attacking your home out of desperation could harm your mental health also consider you might have to kill thousands in defense of your shelter. At least in space all you would have is survivors guilt.
I am guessing that it might be best to hide the Biodome on the high seas or better yet under the sea.
