I support universal health care in the U.S. I was so happy when they required coverage of pre-existing conditions and eliminated life time maximum coverage. I was worried that my wife’s illness would wreck us financially. Sadly she died before it became an issue. The cost and trouble of her care was never really an issue. She died because the best care we could find could not prevent her decline.

People are right to question if the U.S. can afford universal health care. Not for the most often stated reasons. The reason the U.S. probably can’t afford universal health care is because the Middle Class will be taxed to pay for it and the universal health care laws will do nothing to control the out of control cost the system charges. The Plutocratic Oligarchic Elites will not allow the cash cow that is our medical system to have its profits cut. The government will be forced to pay exorbitant prices for drugs, they will not be allowed to negotiate. Unnecessary procedures will be performed even more often than now and since it will be free or inexpensive for everyone, instead of being limited by insurance companies. Prices for everything will rise because the government will allow it . We will not be allowed to tax the rich to pay for this so either we tax the not-rich or we run bigger deficits. It seems even Republicans are no longer deficit hawks.

We need to move to universal health care and find some way to make the Powers that Be give up the cash cow and focus on outcomes.
