I suspect that this story, while well thought out and presented is more wishful thinking than apt analysis.
If we stick to the concepts and disregard the example, the story actually does explain why these toxic males are still attractive, still more popular than the ones more conforming to your idea.
Enough women still go for the bad guy for the bad guy to date, get married, get elected, become CEO, etc.
More than enough men are wanna be's.
Your confident men with high emotional intelligence and empathy are going to remain back benchers, second string, not going to rise to the top.
Sad as it may be, violence, bravado, lying, cheating, stealing, are still the most effective pathway to the top ranks. Don't dismiss them all as insecure, lacking in confidence, or self-esteem.
Most of them are egotistical narcissists, think they are GOAT.
