I think equally important is the prevalence of single issue voters. Each of the parties has captured a collation of voters using a small number of issues.

Social Justice / Social Darwinism

Reproductive rights / Protection for the unborn

Gun Control / Gun rights

Raise Taxes / Cut Taxes

Environment / Drill baby drill

More Regulation / Deregulation

Federal Controls / States Rights

Raise Federal Minimum Wage / No Federal Minimum wage

Federal Health Care / Private Health Care

Many voters may claim to be Independent but they will mostly still vote based on one or two of these issues. They really have picked a side they just don’t want to wear a party label.
