I think people confuse writing with journalism. The accept editorials as reporting. Yes, a person can do investigational journalism without the support of a major news outlet but a lot more skullduggery would go undiscovered.

I think that the major news outlets don't and probably can't do enough investigations and just rely on what is released for public consumption.
