I think you have too limited a view of the alternatives.

Sustainability is mandatory to avoid collapse but not so much equitability. We could be sustainable with haves and have nots. Actually it would be easier to achieve sustainability if only a fraction of the population was allowed to live a modern lifestyle or live with freedom.

I am not recommending this just pointing out that the Powerful know of this alternative. I doubt they are very interested in equitability.

I think they would happily lock most of us up in concentration camps and feed us gruel, dress us in rags and barely protect us from the elements. I mean seriously millions are already displaced and living like that.

They could take a page from Stalin’s playbook and do like he did to Ukraine in the 30's.

Oh, greatly should we fear the day that they don’t need most of us to provide goods and services. On that day they would let us starve and if we don’t go meekly to our grave they would gun us down in the streets. Automation and Artificial Intelligence could force them to provide UBI or Genocide. I imagine they will choose which ever is cheaper and easier.
