I would explain it with death of virtue following the collapse of religiosity. We need a return to virtue. Proper virtue.

Humility against pride, Kindness against envy, Abstinence against gluttony, Chastity against lust, Patience against anger, Liberality against greed, and Diligence against sloth.

We need to remember that pride, lust, and greed are evil.
