I take exception to your use of stupid and intelligent. I also take exception to your attributing consequences to people an not to their actions.

Instead of stupid I would suggest you use the word foolish or ill-conceived and instead of intelligent you use the word wise.

It is also important to understand that intelligent people can make foolish decision, execute foolish actions or act against society's interests in favor of self-interest.

People with less intelligence (stupid people) often avoid being foolish because the have common sense, understand their limitations or otherwise just don't fuck up. Stupid people are not necessary fools.

Society is full of perverse incentives that motivate people to act in their self-interest as the expense of society's interests. Sometimes for them it is simply a matter of survival. Mostly it is just greed and ego fulfillment.
