If you had a skill, you don't lose it if you are over 45. I see a lot of people over 45 working. I am 65 and was laid off when I was in my early 50's. I got a job without even looking for one. The "can't get a job because of ageism is only a thing is a narrow set of industries. Many companies are happy to hire people over 45 if they have a skill.
