If you have to work that hard promoting yourself either you just don't have what it takes or you are in the wrong workplace.

It should be almost effortless.. Do excellent work and do it in a way that it is obvious who did it. Any time you spend on selfpromotion is time you are not doing excellent work and it will look like you are grandstanding. If you ever say look here what a good job you did, you just shot yourself in the foot and probably alienated your peers.

I have had my peers steal my ideas and run to management with them but those peers know who had the smarts and know that they need you. Management probably knows where the original idea came from unless you were being secretive. Just be open and low key. Don't hide you light under a basket but don't hang it in Times Square either.

Take stock of your worth. If you are just a cog in a big machine don't expect huge rewards.
