Interesting that Patrick's book is called "The Motive" what motivates people to be Leaders, money, ego, power or generosity and love? Since I meet very few leaders who actually lead but show more attributes of being a Boss or Dictator, I don't think much of people who want to be the Leader. I think I am a great leader but I have never wanted to be the leader. I have volunteered when I know that I needed to lead but did not want too. If you are not in it for the money, ego or power the rewards are rarely adequate for the stress, effort and frustration.
If you draft the right leader, they will be better than most who would volunteer. You can't just draft anyone. As an officer you must have faced the situation where you had to assign someone a task and the best candidate was unlikely to volunteer. I don't know what rank you attained but were you ever in a briefing where the smartest person in the room rarely spoke and often only when their opinion was requested? The best and brightest are less likely to volunteer. If you are talented and smart you can succeed without power or ego, if you can feel successful without bossing other people around.
