It is a crisis of religion. We worship the wrong God. Religions offer a carrot and a stick (your crisis of storytelling is correct we don't have the right parables). Everyone, not kidding here, everyone is out for what they think is best for themselves. The story needs to spin how doing good for the planet, future generations and others is what is best for each of us. The God we worship needs to be Gaia! The Green Mother.

I am a long time Conservationist. Conserve, preserve and protect. Climate change is just the latest manifestation of the depredations too which humans have subjected the planet. Sadly, White Male Christian Europeans are the worst and longest acting perpetrators of these depredations.

The depredations of the poor are tiny and of little consequences. It is the rich and powerful who are and will be responsible for the Holocene Extinction. Gaia is a just God and will punish the guilty with this extinction and resurrect the planet with new life. Life will rise from the dead and God will bring forth a new epoch. Maybe some humans will survive or maybe we will just be fossils and relics. Maybe we are unable to find other intelligent life in the universe is because it rarely lasts more than a few hundred thousand years. Tiny flashes in celestial time. Mere instances of geological time. Is it really worth the effort to save humanity, really. Are we really that special?
