It isn't and doesn't have to be this way.

It could be it is that way for you because that is what you choose. I should be a balance and negotiation not a war.

What you describe is a situation out of balance where employers have the upper hand and can make unreasonable demands.

I don't think that is currently the case. Stand your ground, make reasonable demands and reject unreasonable demands.

Also, you must consider the marketplace. If you can easily be replaced or if you are more trouble than you are worth, tread lightly. If your employer will not compromise, then maybe it is time to quit while the job market is hot.
