It should not even be considered a sacrifice to let a guilty person be punished as the law provides.

Matters not the form of government, democratic, socialist, communist, fascist, the law needs to be upheld, and nobody is above the law. The people's faith in their government depends on the rule of law providing a good measure of justice.

Even just the appearance of the rich and connected getting special treatment undermines the people's faith in government. Is there any doubt why people have so little respect for government or our elected officials. Nepotism, privilege, back room deals, pardons, legal bribery (lobbying and political contributions), coverups, etc. have undermined the system to the point of it no longer is a surprise.
