Most times it is money but money is just the medium of exchange. I can turn my dollar compensation into any number of other stores of value. My compensation spends only a little time as dollars. It moves to equity and assets as well as sustenance and shelter quite quickly. Some people are compensated with stock and stock options. The value of your compensation is not the dollars but the things you can exchange those dollars for. Of course you are required to pay your taxes with dollars.
