My first wife converted from Methodist to LDS after we married. I sometimes would attend things with her and we had the missionaries for dinner once a month as is de rigueur. We were pretty close with one other couple and friends with a few others. Nobody seemed passionate about doctrine, but they did follow most Morman practices. I did not press them on issues, and I did not flaunt my non-belief in their presence (actually avoided religion as a topic). The women in no way seem cowed or subservient (my wife certainly wasn't). I knew some Seventh Day Adventists when I was growing up. The girls did not dress any different than most of the other girls as school, we did have a dress code at school so maybe that was why, but we are not talking about floor length dresses or button up sleeves and collars. I never met the parents but the kids I knew mostly did not seem religious at all. Amish and Mennonites are such small minorities I don't even think they matter in this conversation. Except for the passionate Evangelicals, the church leaders are devout as are some members and have strong feelings about some points of dogma, but I don't really think for the rank and file it is that big a deal.
