"NATO does not want to expand", are you kidding? NATO is not the EU but most of the EU belong to NATO.

It plays both ways, Russia wants protection from NATO, they are uncomfortable that NATO countries are right on their borders. Russia just bungled things and can't seem to be effective diplomatically.
