While the citizens of Whiteville worked hard, let’s say for work correctly valued at $20 per hour, when they turned around to purchase necessary goods and services from the market they served they paid perhaps $25 per hour. The first 20 went to cover the true value of the good or service, and that is fair. The additional 5 went straight into the pocket of an owner with zero interest in the quality of life in Whiteville, Kansas.

Not true, if the citizens paid only $20 per hour than the owner would get nothing, why would he run a business that pays him nothing for his time and no return on his capital investment. Yes, the additional 5 went straight into the pocket of an owner as compensation for his management of the enterprise and as a return on his investment which is at risk should the business fail. It is not obvious that the owner has zero interest in the quality of life in Whiteville, Kansas. Maybe he brought his business there to improve the employment opportunities of that community because he is connected with the community, maybe grew up there or has family there, you don’t know anything about his motives but you judge him.
