One summer my brother and I spent two weeks with our uncle (he did go to town and leave us for a few hours once in a while) at his camp in the Maine woods on North Pond. Totally off the grid. The camp did have a propane powered refrigerator and gas lights. Winters at that cabin would be tough but do able as we would burn wood for heat. Yes, outhouses and a dug well, no running water. It could have been modernized to have solar powered lights, refrigerator and running water. Sadly, the camp was demolished by the paper company (it was on leased land) after it was inherited by my cousins who did not perform necessary maintenance. I could live like that; the biggest drawback is healthcare and transportation. Solar charged EV would solve transportation and healthcare is even a problem today.
