I read something somewhere, old investing guide, only invest in sure things. It pointed out that if you buy when the market is in a recession, it is basically a sure thing, the markets will recover. U.S. government bonds are a sure thing, you can trade them for a gain or hold them to maturity for a gain.

We just went thru a kind of tough time where interest rates were less than the rate of inflation, a fixed rate investment actually had a negative return, but you still had pay tax on a dollar value gain. That was really broken and to a degree it is still true today. That compound interest was in real money a loser.
