Putin screwed up, the west screwed up and Ukraine is suffering the consequences. I can imagine that Putin expected that the Ukraine would not resist the invasion because to do so would mean he would destroy their country even if he does not conquer it. The Ukrainian resistence probably did not realizes that there was no winning only two different kinds of losing. Submit and suffer the indignity of annexation along with probably a genocide of Anti-Russians. Don't submit and suffer the destruction of your infrastructure and a generation of your people, that or the combination of the two, to a degree or so. The best case outcome at this point is horribly ugly, not seeming better than just not resisting in the first place. I mean, for the day to day worker or small business owner does it really matter that much what kind of government run by whoever. It is really only the rich and politicians who are much affected by the government, the government changes most of them lose everything the worker, hum, they might even be better off, it is hard to say. For the dead, probably much better to have surrendered on day one or any day soon thereafter.

Pacificism makes sense.
