So after 8 years of driving and $10,000 spent on gas is that really more expensive than $3,500 spent on e-gas and a $6,500 battery

For a Tesla Model S85, the price is at around $6,500. You may think that’s too much, but if you think about the warranty of the battery which is eight years, that’s not too bad. That price is fairly reasonable. Let me explain to you why.

Don’t look for your e-car to save you money but it does help a little in the fight against pollution. I say a little because making batteries causes a lot of pollution too.

Pollution beyond carbon emissions

Battery production causes more environmental damage than carbon emissions alone. Consider dust, fumes, wastewater and other environmental impacts from cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; water shortages and toxic spills from lithium mining in Latin America, which can alter ecosystems and hurt local communities; a heavily polluted river due to nickel mining in Russia; or air pollution in northeastern China, as mentioned above.

Batteries will get cheaper and maybe we can somehow control the environmental damage from battery production.

E-cars are the future but if you want to save the world don’t drive anything or at least drive a high gas mileage vehicle and don’t drive as much.

For my analysis I use 30 mpg and 12,500 miles per year. If you drive a higher gas mileage vehicle or drive fewer miles the gas car does better in the trade and if you drive the e-car more miles then the e-car does better.
