Special is what makes special special. If nothing is special, then everything is mundane. Using the china and crystal might be what makes a special dinner more special. It might just be a signal to your guests that you consider them special. I know it can also be wealth signaling. I don't have many special things (things reserved for special occasions) but I don't see anything wrong with keeping somethings special. Special clothes, well, I think it kind of goes without saying, certain clothes are needed for certain occasions. That does not mean they are a waste. I still wear suits and coats that are quite old but in fine shape and style but I only wear them for special occasions. Same for my special leisure clothes, my Tommy Bahama's are reserved for vacation they are going on their 7th season.
One person's clutter is another person's treasure. I acquire quite a lot of what many would consider clutter. Yeah, when I die, they will probably throw a lot of my stuff in the trash. Few people know how to repurpose, re-use, repair or otherwise put damaged, cast off or out of style items to good use. I wear out things nobody wears. I suspect that someone without clutter and is too neat might need treatment for OCD.
