That is not true. Middle class is always the same percentage of the population. It is the middle three fifths of the income distribution. The third through the seventh decile. The third and fourth deciles are lower middle class, the fifth and sixth deciles are middle class and the seventh and eight deciles are upper middle class. The first decile is poor, second is working class, nineth is the rich and the tenth is the super rich. What people often consider middle class is really upper middle class or rich. A lot of rich people call themselves middle class to avoid attacks on the rich.
