The problem is who they surveyed and what they asked. They asked Americans about the world, the Americans they asked don't care about "the" world, they care about "their" world. They did not answer the asked question they answered like the question was "is your world getting better in your lifetime." Their response was not related to the 10 metrics that Bailey and Tupy evaluated. Their response was based on things more immediate and personal, like how easy it was to find a nice place to live, or a job they liked or how bad the traffic is or how bad is crime. Things like global poverty or global hunger or wars in Africa or improve global healthcare. Global healthcare is a great example, while it might have improved globally it has probably gotten worse in the USA in their lifetime.

While things have improved on the Macro Level, nobody lives on the Macro Level.
