The U.S. is not an Empire and resisted imperialists. For more than one hundred years we have not annexed the territory we conquered with a few tiny exceptions.
The U.S. has extended a sort of faux economic hegemony. Yes, I expect that dominance to diminish. Yes, we are turning inward. We are looking to improve the lives of our citizens as opposed to trying to police the world.
China will eventually become the worlds largest economy, the largest exporter, the largest population, the largest polluter, the largest importer of coal and oil, the largest military (wait, they are already some of those things). Why could this happen, because the U.S. opened its markets to China. We have been building China into the worlds next Economic Hegemon. I have no regrets about this. I elevated 100’s of millions of people out of poverty.
China will now bear an increasing responsibility for policing the world and solving the worlds problems while the U.S. focuses on its domestic tranquility and pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. The parents eventually have to pass the torch to the children.
