Emotional, ignorant racism trumps economic prosperity.
Who knew?
This can be a hopeful line of thought. It is saying that money isn’t everything. It is saying that some sociological factors are more important than consumerism. Sadly it is also saying that for some people they would accept worse economic conditions if it allowed them to live in a society where they are a permanent advantaged majority.
Do you understand the attractiveness of being a permanent advantaged majority. They find great comfort in knowing that no matter how bad things get there will always be someone worse off, someone to whom they are the better. To them it is worth the price of the loss of some prosperity, to them prosperity is relative not discrete. Prosperity is status not wealth. It is about image not reality. If you let the “others” get uppity it blows the whole thing up.
I have not changed my party affiliation but I have evolved from a Republican to a RINO to not knowing which way to turn. I was a fiscal conservative, social moderate and environmental liberal. I was a Libertarian Republican who wanted to weaken the Federal Government in favor of more local government. I believed the Federal Government was corrupt, out of touch, controlled by monied elites, oligarchs and career politicians.
I thought that every party had its bad elements and all we had to do was keep them in check. I see now that the Republican Party was actually controlled by its bad elements but they were closeted, they hid their true agenda and focused on causes they had in common with moderates like myself. There were always times when I voted for Democrats even though I was a registered Republican. I have always had a prejudice against people who speak with a southern drawl. When I moved from the place I grew up that was all white and move to the south, I heard my first hateful racist speech and it was uttered with a southern drawl and I have a hard time getting over the impression that if you speak with a southern drawl you are an ignorant racist.
I know that is bigoted and some southerners are intelligent and woke but I have also had the same southern drawl aimed at me. I have been told, “Yankee go home” and “Damn Yankee.” I have also heard things in a southern drawl that are not fit to repeat. Where I have lived there are racist Democrats as well as racist Republicans.
To circle back to the original subject.
I would be willing to sacrifice much economic prosperity to live in a more just and inclusive society.
Who knew? Would you.
I would be willing to sacrifice much economic prosperity to live in a world that takes better care of the environment.
I would be willing to give up a lot to live in a society where the people have more freedom and corporations and oligarchs have much less.
I think the more you have the more you need to be restrained.
