This I believe and understand, the original statement implied it took more energy to extract a barrel of oil than a barrel of oil produces, which I don't believe is accurate. Statements like this one and the original one are pretty useless without real numbers, data, evidence. I would parse your statement and find some weaknesses.
You are saying "the energy required for extraction, transportation, and refining has increased significantly." I would suggest you check the facts, transportation and refining are now more efficient than in the past, I don't think those contributions to the cost have significantly increased.
We do need to reduce the demand and production of oil and gas and coal. Starting with the most polluting and most costly sources first. Certainly, offshore and oil sands production need to be curtailed and then eliminated.
I find it disturbing that many of the people who advocate for policy that I agree with don't provide proper evidence for their claims and often make claims that can't be supported with evidence. Many of them just parrot things they hear and don't really know the facts.
