This is another case of when considering the U.S. as a whole obfuscates the issues. Many places in the U.S. have the necessary infrastructure to allow people to not need a car. There are many places in the U.S. that it would be stupid to try and create infrastructure to allow people to not need a car. Actually, sometimes the problem is not that I might have a car but that I drive when it would be fine to walk or take my bike or a bus. People tend to be lazy. I would feel very limited anywhere if I did not have a truck. My interest and hobbies and some of my conservation efforts require that I move big things but even though I have a truck, I walk to the store, library, etc. and most days the truck stays in the garage.
