This war is not as bad for Russia as much of the western media would have us believe. Right now, the problem with negotiations is the parties are too far apart. Ukraine wants Russia to pull back to the pre-2014 borders. Russia wants all of the Donbas and Crimea and maybe more. I doubt that Ukraine can push the Russians out of the Donbas and Crimea. Even with a favorable loss rate they just don't have the manpower even if the west provides all the weapons they can use. It would be a pyrrhic victory because there would not be enough remaining Ukrainians to populate the country, it would be a new country of foreign migrants maybe even a lot of Russians. Hardly any Russian infrastructure has been damaged. Ukraine will need billion maybe even trillions to repair the damage from the war. Yeah, the west will give them the impounded Russian assets, but they will need more, and the west will give a little and loan a lot and the Ukraine will have a huge debt. Our banks and arms makers will profit well off this war. If somehow Ukraine does push Russia out of the Donbas and Crimea, they will be faced with a lingering insurgency and terroristic acts against the state. Too often people equate victory with peace. Ask the Israelis how that goes.
