This war was neither sudden nor unprovoked. The war is 8 years old and this past year's efforts are just an escalation. The escalation was telegraphed and reported in advance. The opportunity for negotiation to avoid the escalation was not taken and more like the escalation was encouraged by the weak response to the earlier conflicts and annexations.
