Your Dad asking about locking to door is cold. Maybe an appropriate question for much later but not correct at the time.
The police asking the question about locking the door, it depends on how they handled it. It probably has to be asked and answered for the record along with other probably painful questions.
Reporting a crime like this is, I think, for the best. I know it comes with a price but I can’t imagine the cost.

My wife had a motorcycle accident the other day. She did not tell me until I got home from work. I almost finished a question about the bike before I switched to asking how she was. She was right there so I knew she was not badly hurt but it turned out that there were scars I could not see. May I have learned this lesson now, be at first concerned for those you care about and leave material concerns as secondary.
