We are suffering because we have created perverse incentives. We created a score keeping system that values material goods over social progress. Things over enlightenment. Waste is only a minor negative and conservation is only a minor positive when they should be weighted more heavily. Instead of using the whole animal we will eat the tenderloin and throw the rest away and brag about how we only eat tenderloin.

Capitalism even regulated capitalism will promote whatever the society values. We are currently in a society that values material things above all else. Two things display the value of material things, consumption and the ability to consume. That means it values people who have lots of expensive stuff or those with a lot of money to buy expensive stuff.

When society values social progress and enlightenment over material goods then you will see capitalism pivot toward the production of those social goods. Do you want to be loved or lusted for.

As an aside you said make money, I know what you mean but only the central banks make money what you mean is acquire capital or equity.
