What you describe is an argument to play the system, to game the system. To move the needle.
What about honesty? What about sticking to what you believe and not faking it.
You are suggesting that I should support and vote for politicians and policies I don't really want so that the median voter moves closer to politicians and policies I do support. I still crave to support my true beliefs and not some unsupportable crazy leftist scheme. Yes, the median is too far to the right but no way I am going into left field.
Granted I might have done that a time or two, including recently. I am a registered Republican who often votes for Democrats when I feel that the scales have shifted too far to the right. I said registered Republican because I am non-partisan centrist who wants to still vote in primaries and in my state the Republican's Primaries are more important as there I can move the needle closer to the center. I would rather push the right to the left than the left to the left.
I am a social moderate, an environmental leftist and a economic conservative. I am a Liberal but not a Progressive. I am a Republican Social Democrat. I believe in MMT and maybe even UBI but understand that if you give Congress (the electorate) a bottomless purse they will ruin our economy. I am slightly elitist but feel like the elite have over step their role and forgot their obligations are not to themselves but to society. Noblese Oblige.
