Whose grid, what grid, why off the grid. I see you said something about independence. As a child we used to spend a couple weeks in the summer at a cabin that we had to walk a mile from to road to get to. It had no electricity or running water. There were no cell phones or internet then, so we were completely out of contact for those couple weeks. Drinking water from a spring, using an outhouse and chamber pots. Heating water on a wood stove for baths. Living on the supplies we packed in and the fish we caught in the pond. The loons woke us up in the morning and the frogs sang us to sleep at night. We would be spoiled today, we probably would have packed in some solar and batteries over a period of years and have running water, lights and maybe even Star Link. We did have a battery powered transistor radio, but we did not listen to it much.
