You are right the government needs to fix this and the fix is simple. It is called the homestead exemption. Raise property taxes a lot and give homeowners a big tax exemption if they live in the home. Two U.S. states I have lived in had homestead exemptions. The exemption is a fixed amount so it is more beneficial for lower value properties. Helping those who need the help the most.
