Regarding dominate and submissive. In a matriarchy women dominate but they have a different style of domination.

Women dominate for the benefit of the community men dominate for their own benefit or the benefit of their in group.

I know I am about to use a couple stereotypes but understand there is some truth behind these and I have seen it here in the USA. I have seen male co-workers who's wives run things. The men deposit their pay into a joint account and are given an allowance by their wife. The wife controlled the check book. This was back before credit cards were so common.

The first stereotype is the Irish Wife with the No Good Husband. She really is the one who wears the pants and he is a drunkard but works and does what she tells him to do.

There is an analogous Russian Plot that is much the same.

My personal experience, my first wife had two children with other men who she dumped before she married me. It was clear if things were not done her way it would be trouble. We lived together for a while before we got married. While I had the bigger paycheck she really had a veto over almost everything but she was never unreasonable. When she was very sick and then died she stopped caring so much but by then the kids were grown too.
